Embedded
deeply in folk tradition, woodwork is a craft in which creativity
of the kashmiri artisian has found unrestricted expression.
From wooden toys,sandals,rice-measures and other untility articles
to intricate lattice work and ornate cornices, columns, door and ceiling
panels, facades and roof eaves, this creativity has covered a wide
span from early times. However, the term wood carving in the present
context almost invariably implies carved walnut wood-a material
that abounds in Kashmir and for its fine grain and tint lends itself
with natural grace to creation of attractively carved shapes.
A variety of articles, both decorative and utility, ranging from
smaller items like bowls, trays, cigarette boxes, wall plaques and
table lamps to screens, tables, chairs, rug boxes, cabinets, bed-steads
and other bigger items of furniture is crafted to walnut wood to
cater of conemporary tastes and trends.
Designs most widely employed are those inspired by local flora;
the Chinar Leaf, iris, rose, bunch of grapes, water reed etc. while
animal forms also find a place. The dragon from CHinese Turkistan
and the latticed floral carving from Sassanid tradition are some
of the imbibed influences in design that have enriched the craft.
The kashmiri crafsman excels in intricate and ornate carvings,
though of late this tendency is yielding place to more emphasis
on functional aspect.
