The
Hand knoted carpet of Kashmir is one of the most coveted of floor
coverings in the world. he fascinating range of its designs, the
luxurious softness and resilence of its pile and the vivaciousness
of its colors makes it a creation of art! A painting in textile!
At once decorative and functional - are rare combination- it holds
sway in the international markets for its exquisite quality.
Carpet weaving is said to have been introduced into Kashmir from
persia and central asia. It flourished under the Moghals but really
came into its stride in the 19th century when some British firms
organised it along commercial lines.
The weaving is guided by pattern drawers design, known as Talim,
which is committed to paper in a coded script, indicating number
and color. Fineness of the silk(or wool as the may be)and the number
of knots to the square inch are factors that determine the quality
of a carpet and hence its value.
Design and style in kashmir carpets continues to be chiefly inspired
by Oriental rugs of persia and central asia, though a number of
attractive variants have also been introduced. Charecteristically
Kashmiri designs reflecting the scenic beauty of the valley have
also been evolved.
